A STRONG-WILLED CHILD AND AN OVERINDULGENT DAD

As you read Mitch Winehouse’s story, it’s very clear that he deeply loved his daughter, and she loved him too. She even had a large “Daddy’s Girl” tattoo on her left arm. As a father who has sons about the age of Amy Winehouse at her death, my heart truly goes out to him. That said, it’s also clear that he was unable to help his daughter discipline herself to resist the destructive temptations that ultimately killed her. Clearly, no one loves a child more than a parent, so why at the first sign of trouble didn’t he push as hard as her managers to get her into rehab? Why did he give in, letting Amy have her way?

As I read his book, it struck me that the seeds for Mitch Winehouse’s behavior may have been planted in Amy’s early childhood. As his narrative revealed more about Amy’s temperament and character, it’s clear that his daughter was a classic strong-willed child. He paints a picture of a young girl determined to always have her own way. And it seems, even at a young age, at critical points she got it. For example, when Amy was just twelve, she wanted to attend drama school full-time, but her parents were against it. So, without telling them, she applied to the Sylvia Young Theatre School. I was surprised to read that when she was accepted, her parents let her attend. No doubt, a parent allowing a child, no matter how talented, to get his or her way after being disobedient and dishonest in this way would send the wrong message, especially to a strong-willed child.

Sadly, this same pattern of behavior emerged later in her life — with dire consequences. In 2005, she met a guy named Blake Fielder-Civil and fell madly in love with him. But there was a big problem. Blake was a heroin and cocaine addict. Given Amy’s problem with drinking, her father was concerned that Blake’s drug habit would become her habit too. Predictably, it did. He was also concerned that Amy would marry Blake without him knowing, and he made her promise that she would tell him about any wedding plans beforehand. However, without telling him or her mother, she married Blake on a trip to Miami. She did it “her way.” Unfortunately, one of Blake’s primary tasks as her husband was to facilitate Amy’s drug habit, and according to Mitch Winehouse, Blake even brought Amy drugs while she was in rehab.

Finally, Mitch Winehouse describes his daughter as “mischievous, bold, and daring”6 and recounts stories about Amy being a risk-taker as a young girl, at times not listening to him or others, even when it was in her best interest to do so. In every school that she attended, she was “disruptive and attention-seeking,”7 and he and Amy’s mother received regular complaints about Amy’s behavior. In short, she had a consistent record of disciplinary problems that were sure to impact her later in life.
